The Relationship Between
Ayurveda and the Body
The doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha – are the three physiological forces of nature. Each of these doshas govern how the body functions and they are the building blocks of Ayurveda. Every individual is born with a unique constitution consisting of these doshas. As we progress through life, we experience a state of imbalance in these doshas. This imbalance is what causes dis-ease and suffering. Once this imbalance is corrected, and the individual is aligned with their constitution, the state of optimal health is achieved.
Vata
Vata is known to be responsible for movement and represents the idea of air/wind. An imbalance in Vata can cause hypersensitivity, energetic depletion, pain in the body, tics and tremors, etc.
Kapha
Kapha is known to be responsible for structure/lubrication and is associated with water and earth elements. An imbalance in Kapha can cause swelling, mucus buildup, weight gain, lethargy, congested organs/tissues, etc.
Pitta
Pitta is known to be responsible for digestion/metabolism and represents the fire element. An imbalance in Pitta can cause acne, inflammation, fever, acid reflux, diseases of the liver and spleen, etc.
Different doshas tend towards different imbalances, hence, the treatment for every individual varies. A diet, lifestyle practice or herb that may be suitable for one may be another’s poison. Understanding the physical body and the mind together gives us a bigger picture, generating more efficient results.
The Relationship Between
Ayurveda and the Mind
Often we worry about removing toxins from our physical bodies and decide to do a detox. What about the mind? What about the toxins we accumulate throughout our lives and the experiences we go through? The state of the mind, the toxins, the thoughts, and our experiences impact our physical health.
Ayurveda believes in the balance between the mind, body and soul. It is believed that we can only achieve optimal health if all three are in balance. The mind is treated as the sixth organ as it has control over all five sense organs. Hence, maintaining a healthy state of mind helps us balance some of the physical conditions we experience.
In Ayurveda, everything we consume through our five senses is considered food. The choices we make when picking movies, books, scents, and everything we consume are all believed to deeply impact the state of our mind and the tolerance we have for stressors. A healthy tolerance helps us remain calm and reasonable under circumstances we otherwise would feel an immense amount of pressure. However, just like the three doshas in the body manifest in different ways, they have different symptoms in the mind as well.
Vata
Vata in the mind, just as in the body, is responsible for movement (of thoughts). Some examples of a Vata imbalance in the mind are anxiety, fear, overthinking, and poor memory.
Kapha
Kapha in the mind is responsible for mental and emotional stability. Some examples of a Kapha imbalance in the mind are depression, complacency, dullness, and sentimentality.
Pitta
Pitta in the mind, just as in the body, is responsible for digestion (of information). Some examples of a Pitta imbalance in the mind are anger, resentment, and judgment.
Different doshas tend towards different imbalances, hence, the treatment for every individual varies. A diet, lifestyle practice or herb that may be suitable for one may be another’s poison. Understanding the physical body and the mind together gives us a bigger picture, generating more efficient results.
